I wouldn't say that Rodriguez is an, as you put it, UGH Director, and I would also say that Kevin Smith is a good director, even if he 'doesn't use a DOP'.
But then again, that's their way of doing things, and from what movies I have seen of Smith (clerks, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) and Rodriguez (my thrid fave director after 1. Scorsese and 2. QT) I would say that their methods work very well.
But that's just my opinion, and you're more than entitled to yours.
And to the question this post ponders. I've told my Mum I'm going to become a Director based solely on the quality of my screenplays alone (just to shut her up) but she claims "You'll never be as lucky as Tarantino".
What I'm actually going to do is take Film at college (I've got an interview next week) then go on to Film School. I've got a few ideas I'm working on, and I hope to try and send them off to the BBc, for feedback, job offers, cash LOL.
